Star Trek & Me

I can't remember a time where I wasn't aware of Star Trek's existence.

Star Trek has pretty much been a constant in my life since my early childhood and it was one of the only things that my father and I enjoyed together.  I remember watching Star Trek: TOS at a very young age, the at times horror like imagery burned into my young brain so completely that certain scenes I can recall with a disturbing clarity.  One such scene can be found in the episode entitled 'The Empath'; the episode that was banned by the BBC until the early 90s because it's content was too extreme.  The episode contains torture and the BBC refused to air it until 1994 for 'disturbing content'.  I believe I watched this episode in 1994 on it's first showing on the BBC.  I'm fairly sure of this, because I know my father would not have missed it.  I would have been 6 years old and scenes of Kirk's torture in a black room and the Empath's highlighted eyes and baleful expression have haunted me to adulthood.

After TOS we watched TNG, DS9 and Voyager.  Usually as the shows were aired, it was something we always did.  My dad was a fan but bashful about it, he had a communicator, tried to learn Klingon, and would always make the Vulcan salute while saying 'live long and prosper' in his best Nimoy impression (which admittedly wasn't very good).  He had never been to a convention until last year, when I paid for his ticket and brought him to a local one - it wasn't Star Trek themed though of course there was some merchandise.
That's Captain
Jamie T Kirk
to you!

I think his bashfulness in regards to Star Trek rubbed off on me, and I didn't really slip into the fandom until fairly recently, and boy, has it hit me with vengeance!

My two favourite series has to be Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Voyager.  TOS is an ultimately charming Hornblower in space. I can't express how much I adore the characters and visuals and that wonderful feeling of optimism and exploration.  Voyager is a favourite because of the isolation of the crew and the strong characterisation of Captain Janeway.

I'm currently enjoying rewatching TOS and Voyager as well as reading TOS novels.  My first TOS novel was 'Killing Time', which is absolutely wonderful and shameless and I am so glad I got my grubby mitts on a first edition copy.  I hope to read them all and review them here, so be warned!

I hope to go to a Star Trek convention in the near future, but failing that I will try to find kindred spirits at more general conventions, or perhaps one day I will be able to go to the states and attend a convention there!

On 29/10/16 I went to one of my usual conventions costumed as FemKirk or 'Jamie T Kirk'.  I made the costume myself.

On 18/11/16 I attended a promotional event for Star Trek Beyond at Manpower Offices, London dressed as Jamie T Kirk!  Met some wonderful people, had some pictures taken AND entered a competition for the opportunity to win a trip to Paramount Pictures and a costume used in Star Trek Beyond!  I didn't win, there was like... a secret Vulcan there, but I was pleased with how much I did know...!

Actually left the house on a weekend to get this!
It was at a reduced price in store!  Hehe!

14/08/17 - Did a mini photoshoot with a new skant, review to come!

I don't have a name for this character!! Lt. (?)
